Getting Rid Of Lice With Olive Oil - How to Apply Olive Oil to Hair When You Have Lice

Another common home remedy for head lice is removing lice with olive oil.

This is one of the most common remedies for a reason, olive oil for head lice is natural, and very easy to get hold of.

Olive oil does do a good job at removing the lice. It helps to dissolve the exoskeleton of the louse, so killing them faster than other oils. You can use the oil to stun the lice, then you can remove them manually. You can also use it to smother the lice over the course of the day.

To treat with olive oil, you will need the following:

1 liter of Olive Oil – Cold pressed is best, but any will do.
A nit comb
A shower cap
Movies or other entertainment

The olive oil treatment procedure for head lice is as follows:

Pour olive oil onto dry hair and comb through. Start in small sections, going in from the side. It helps to have a squeezy bottle so you can direct it in and go from root to tip. This is much easier than pouring it all on the head and attempting to spread it out from there.

Once the hair is completely coated, you can see the lice trapped in the hair. You can then comb through and manually remove the live lice that you can see.

Once you have got all the lice you can see out of the hair, cover and leave for up to 8 hours for all of the rest of the lice to smother. You can cover the child’s hair with a plastic cover and a scarf or hat to protect their dignity. A sweat band is also optional to prevent the warm oil running in their eyes.

Once the lice are dead, cover the hair with apple cider vinegar (a natural antiseptic), and let dry. This can be left overnight once dry. There is no need to cover. In the morning, wash as normal. The apple cider vinegar should have loosened the nit glue holding the egg to the shaft. The glue should be rubbery, allowing the eggs to be combed right out.

Make sure you get every single egg out, as the olive oil does not kill eggs.

Neither does the vinegar. The only way for this method to be successful is if you remove every egg. Otherwise your re-infestation will be swift and merciless.
